8th grade is learning about musical form and composition while also preparing for their upcoming production of the Lion King. They will also be creating a Soundtrack/Timeline of My Life to represent important moments of their life accompanied by appropriate music. Ultimately, they will help prepare their final slide show for Graduation in May.
Today they learned about Binary, Ternary, and Rondo Form. We had a chance to analyze "Forget You" along with the "Theme from Star Wars"

Think about how soundtracks create different moods during movies and television shows:
“Summer Nights” The classic Grease soundtrack evokes a happy-go lucky feel, while “Hopelessly Devoted” is full of melancholy. The Twilight Zone creates an eerie, creepy mood, while the Friends theme, “I’ll be There for You” is upbeat and fun and reminds us of our own friendships.
The theme from Jaws makes us feel terrified, suspenseful, or anxious, even when we hear it outside of the movie.

Songs outside the normal musical choices:
“Amazing Grace” reminded a student of when his grandparents died. “Don’t Laugh at Me” by Mark Wills is about being made fun of, something another student dealt with her whole life. Madonna’s “Material Girl” describes the student’s selfish teenage years. “Small Town” by John Mellencamp tells the story of life in a small town in Colorado. Enya’s “Only Time” explains that true understanding may take a whole lifetime.

A page for your soundtrack must include the following elements: • “Soundtrack of My life” title • All six songs with
o Title o Artist o Event connected to it o One paragraph of explanation o A link to the audio recording, the video, or at least the lyrics. • Common theme for font choices, colors, and images
• At least one picture unique to each paragraph/song
• Your final project will be graded on the writing with the connections you made to each song, the inclusion of all of the elements, and how well the overall appearance blends together for the visual presentation (themes, colors, fonts, etc.).

A second option is a “CD cover” for your soundtrack.
o Using a piece of regular posterboard (22x28 inches, white strongly suggested, but not required), use the left side as the cover of your album and the right side as the back, where the songs are listed.
• Left Side- You will need to create a cover with the title “Soundtrack of My Life” and your own name, along with an image or images that relate to you/your life in some way. It should fill the side of the whole page, from edge to edge. The lettering should be large, and as neat as possible. The whole thing should contain color! NOTE: If you use a picture or clip art, you must cite your source!
• Right Side- List your songs in order, along with the event and the paragraph (use example format shown in Step 4). This should also be in a larger font size, be very neat (suggest typing) and easy to read! Remember to plan out- there are six songs that need to be listed! You may choose to type or neatly handwrite your paragraph andthen cut it out and paste it to the posterboard, which is strongly suggested.
